University of Auckland - ShaRE Imaging

Overview of Services

The Imaging Centre offers services and equipment supporting microscopy, spectroscopy, histology, and X-ray crystallography to users within the University and to academic and commercial users outside the University.

Microscopy: In the field of microscopy, we cater to a wide range of imaging needs specialising in transmission electron microscopy (including cryo-TEM), fluorescence microscopy, light microscopy (including live cell imaging), graphics and photography. We also provide a comprehensive range of histological services including automated dehydration, clearing and infiltration services, sample staining as well as paraffin and resin embedding, sectioning and mounting.

Protein Imaging: A Rigaku X-Ray facility containing equipment able to collect X-Ray crystallographic data from protein crystals is also available. The crystals can be at room temperature or are more commonly cooled to 100°K. Trained users are able to collect their own X-ray data or crystals are able to be sent to trained technicians for data collection and analysis.

Graphics & Photography: The graphics unit provides photographic, freehand and illustrative presentations for a wide variey of end-uses including PowerPoint presentations, maps, diagrams, publications, theses graphics, banners etc.

Atomic Force Microscopy:  Two highly advanced AFMs from Asylum Research are available for multiple AFM modes, including air/fluid imaging, mechanical/electrical/magnetic/piezoelectic property studies etc. The MFP-3D Origin AFM and Cypher ES AFM are located at Building 301, Lab 425, City Campus.

There are charges for the use of most of these instruments but several of the smaller instruments such as the light microscopes, are available at no cost to trained users. Our staff will also carry out projects on behalf of researchers when it is cost and time-efficient to do so.
